Investment Objective

The ETF Action Global Thematic AIM Portfolio primary objective is to outperform the Global Market as measured by the MSCI ACWI. To accomplish this objective the investment committee utilizes an actively managed process that is governed and implemented using a transparent and repeatable framework.

Philosophy

Gaining exposure to long-term secular trends through thematic investing may add growth potential and possibly market outperformance over longer time horizons.  However, returns across thematic exposures can diverge widely based on a number of sub-factors including sector exposure, business cycle, macroeconomic environment, fundamentals, valuations, and sentiment. . 

Following a disciplined process outlined in the methodology guide, ETF Action has created a proprietary process to track and identify themes that we believe have an outsized chance to outperform over various time frames.

  • The KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) led net inflows over the past week gathering another $231 million. KWEB has added over $6 billion in assets under management year-to-date, but is down nearly 36% in the period
  • Despite gaining over 11% in the last week, the Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) saw nearly $100 million in net outflows over the period
  • All global thematic segments have seen declines over the 1-month and 3-month periods. However, year-to-date, the Fintech and Industrial Revolution segments have posted double digit gains
  • Evolving Consumer ETFs have seen the widest disparity of returns over the past month. The top performer in the segment, the ETFMG Travel Tech ETF (AWAY), has risen 5.41% while the worst performer in the segment, the Cannabis ETF (CHTX), has fallen 13.53%

  • The ARK Genomic Revolution ETF (ARKG) has seen over $300 million in net outflows in the past month and is down 16.72% in the period
  • The ETFMG Travel Tech ETF (AWAY) continues to outpace other thematic ETFs, gaining 6.03% over the past month. AWAY is the only global thematic ETF to post gains in the last month

  • Net flows for Global Thematic ETFs in September have lagged each month in the past year 
  • The ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) saw $363 million in net outflows over the past week while the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) saw $108 million
  • All Global Thematic segments are deep in the red thus far in September. Fintech ETFs, which have sunk 9.16% month-to-date, continue to be dragged lower by Blockchain ETFs
  • The VanEck Digital Transformation ETF (DAPP) and the Global X Blockchain ETF (BKCH), which are both blockchain ETFs, each declined over 18% in the last month
  • Only three Global Thematic ETFs, the ETFMG Travel Tech ETF (AWAY, +5.27%), the Loncar Cancer Immunotherapy ETF (CNCR, +1.08%), and the Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF (BOTZ, +0.43%), posted gains over the past month

  • Fintech ETFs are down 7.51% thus far in September as Blockchain ETFs dragged performance 
  • Health Innovation ETFs led other thematic segments over the past month, bolstered by solid gains from Biotech and Cancer Immunotherapy ETFs

  • Sustainability ETFs have gathered nearly $13 billion in net inflows over the past year, making it the third largest thematic segment
  • The ARK suite of ETFs saw net outflows over the past past week, the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) saw $242 million, the ARK Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW) saw $143 million, and the ARK Genomic Revolution ETF (ARKG) saw $104 million
  • Disruptive Tech ETFs and Health Innovation ETFs each gained over 2% in the past month and outperformed other thematic segments
  • Cannabis was the worst performing thematic group over the past month as 7 Cannabis ETFs posted double digit declines in the period. The worst performers were the AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (MSOS) and the Global X Cannabis ETF (POTX) which dropped 16.22% and 15.16%, respectively
